I spent my early years romping around Alexandra Palace before moving to Coventry where I attended secondary school and had my second encounter with the live music world, my first being the church choir, where the elders would hit me around the head with their tambourine if I miss behaved! After being slung out of school at 15 I was told by my house master that I should find a band to play in...you must remember in those days that was a cynical remark as he was the one that would cane me for being the last in from band practice, which we held in a tiny broom cupboard. Out of that came 'The Black and White Notes' (me on piano) first gig supporting the Shadows at the drummers dad's pub. Then came 'Sounds International' a seven piece show band doing all the working mens clubs.
On leaving school at 16, the next stage was moving back to London where I joined a band named MOON who were signed up with the Epic label. When Moon split up, I remained with Epic releasing the album 'Night Time Emotions'. Trevor Rabin produced and played on the album whilst Chris Thompson provided backing vocals. Around this time I also sang on Mike Rutherford's 'Small Creep Day'. I went on to work with many other bands including Mezzoforte, Morrisey Mullen and Sniff and the Tears. In 1987 I at last achieved my ambition of forming my own band Contact. Contact was working hard and becoming popular on the London circuit and produced a cassette to sell at gigs. In 1993 the band changed its name to McCalla and released a 14 track CD, 'Push And Pull', which was received with enormous critical acclaim.
My first involvement with Manfred Mann was as a vocalist on the Plains Music album. When Manfred reformed the Earth Band he asked me to join the new band which I did for the 91, 92 and 93 European Tours. I have now worked as the lead vocalist and toured with this band for sixteen years.
As my career has developed over the years I have been involved in many music projects, some of which will be available on this site in the near future. For the moment You Tube will give a good overview of my vocal performances in various bands. I continue to take on new projects regularly. I have worked with Dave Lewis' 1Up. We've had excellent reviews and have appeared at Ronnie Scott's and the 606 Club in Chelsea. There is a link to the bands' site in the 'links' section of this site.
I have been guesting with The Swiss Jazz Orchestra and Funkybrotherhood in Switzerland see links page and having moved to Kent guesting with two bands of top musicians Cut the Funk and The Blues Bandits. Other projects in London and beyond are in the making.
Also, but not least! I have been working on gospel/worship music for the last two years and have some initial demos to download from the iTunes store. The Acoustic album is also available from iTunes.
Although not an academic career I feel I have developed a multitude of skills interpersonally, interacting with international audiences from diverse sections of society, organisationally having to keep to timetables on tour and in the studio. I have had to develop many professional skills on this journey. I consider myself to be a dependable, courteous and adaptable person willing to constantly take on new challenges...
